Every UK casino, every card limit
Debit cards are the only payment method accepted at all ten casinos, therefore, the question is not whether you can use a debit card. The question is how much you can move, and how long you have to wait. All ten casinos have significantly different answer for these questions.

Seven of ten casinos disclose a card limit which you can view before joining. Betway, Betfred and MrQ all leave this section of their websites blank, which is a strange omission for the only payment method used by all players.
The only method no casino ever bars
With terms and conditions for all welcome offers reviewed, one fact is evident. There is not a single casino that restricts the debit card from bonus offers. All the other payment methods offered here are excluded at some point.
Two casinos are even more specific. Betway writes “debit card deposits only” on all their welcome offers for GB, and Betfred requires a debit card deposit while excluding prepaid cards and e-wallets. Fund either account any other way and the spins never arrive.
The rule that follows from this is to make the qualifying first deposit with a debit card at all of the locations mentioned below. Claim the offer, and then you're able to switch to your preferred payment method. It works at all ten, it can’t cost you a bonus anywhere, and it takes one transaction.
The trade-off is what the rest of this page is about. The card is the slowest way to claim an offer and the safest way to get paid, and it is the only method where your own bank can add a charge the casino knows nothing about.

bet365
UKGC account 55149 · Hillside (UK Gaming) ENCbet365 accepts the widest range of card types here: Visa, Mastercard, Visa Electron and Maestro, instant crediting between £5 and £20,000. The card has to be registered in your name. It is also the only casino on this page that warns you about a cost it does not charge: its terms note that some card issuers treat betting transactions as cash payments and may apply a cash advance fee. Withdrawals return to the method you deposited with, split pro rata if you used more than one.

William Hill
UKGC account 39225 · WHG (International) LimitedThere is nothing else like it on ceilings: £5 to £99,000 a deposit, instant. The withdrawal side is the most granular published anywhere on this site, because the maximum withdrawal is card dependent. Maximum cards on MasterCard and Visa Debit are £33,000, Visa Electron is £35,000, and Maestro is £40,000, the highest of the three. Speed is the same. Cards on Visa Direct are paid in roughly 4 hours, while everything else takes 1 to 3 working days.

All British Casino
UKGC account 38758 · L&L Europe LimitedAt All British the card does double duty. Apple Pay and Google Pay are deposit-only here, so anything you win after funding by a wallet has to leave by debit card anyways. Limits are a flat £10 to £5,000 across methods and it aims to process withdrawals within 24 hours on working days. Its payments page is also refreshingly blunt about the law, stating outright that credit cards are banned in the UK for online casinos.

PlayOJO
UKGC account 39326 · Skill on Net LtdPlayOJO gives Visa and Mastercard their own explainer pages, though both are written qualitatively with no figures on them, so the £10 site-wide minimum is what you go by. What it does publish is its surcharge table, and cards come out well: no charge to withdraw by card or online wallet, against £10 for a wire transfer. Everything you win is free of wagering because that promise sits in OJO's rewards policy and covers every offer it runs.

Midnite
UKGC account 42647 · Dribble Media LimitedThe cashier that Midnite uses is very simple and all cash in and cash out methods have the same limits of £5 to £5,000. The catch comes when you what to cash out. They quote cash out times for card withdrawals as up to 5 business days. This is the worst time among all the casinos on this page, as the other casinos quote times of 72 hours, or 3 business days, for their bank rails. Additionally, Midnite only allows one active payment method at a time. This means that if you wanted to cash out and then cash in using a method other than a card, you would have to formally change your payment method.

Betway
UKGC account 39372 · Betway LimitedBetway is one of two casinos that actually doesn’t give the option to card cash out. In this case, debit card cash out is the only option. In most of their welcome promotions, they have the line: “…debit card deposits only….” This promo causes their 150 free spins no wager offer to be a cash out method only option. They accept a lot of safety options for cash out, like PayPal, Apple Pay, Trustly, and Pay by Bank, but none of these are actually available for the welcome offer. They also do not disclose any limits on cash in or cash out. The only number they do state is £5 is the minimum to cash out, and they do charge £1 if your cash out request is lower than £5.

BetVictor
UKGC account 39576 · BV Gaming LimitedBetVictor's card deposits are capped at £1,000. No other casinos on this list have a cap at or under £5,000. This is a very low card deposit limit compared to William Hill. This limit also applies to two other payment methods. The deposit side is also very restrictive with a £1,000 deposit limit. On the cash out side, BetVictor is liberal. You can cash out £5 to £30,000 in a 24 hour period. This means you can cash out much larger amounts than you can deposit.

Betfred
UKGC account 39544 · Petfre (Gibraltar) LimitedThis is the second casino which requires a card for the welcome offer. Betfred only takes debit cards, so the spins are completely dependent on how you funded your account. Betfred claims both deposits and withdrawals are always free. Betfred also hasn’t placed any restrictions on either minimum or maximum withdrawals or deposits, which makes it the only casino here to specify that credit cards do still work in Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands.

Grosvenor Casinos
UKGC account 57924 · Rank Interactive (Gibraltar) LimitedGrosvenor’s website has the per method table that the other casinos on this list have followed, stating £5 in and £5 out for Visa and Mastercard. Card processing time depends on your personal bank. If your card is enabled for Fast Withdrawals, you should expect your card to process in around 15 minutes, and the rest of the cards should expect a 1 to 3 day processing time. Grosvenor also has the strongest commitment against use of credit cards on this page, stating 3 times on this page that they do not accept credit cards nor American Express.

MrQ
UKGC account 60629 · Tek Fox LimitedVisa Debit, Mastercard Debit and Card withdrawals are all within the 60-second guarantee on MrQ; meaning deposits made with these methods will be processed in 60 seconds or a cash £10 will be credited. Any credit card cash out request, even if done through an e-wallet, will not be accepted. The minimum deposit is £10, and support will process a deposit for less if you ask.

Why the caps differ by a factor of ninety-nine
The same Visa Debit Card has a wide range of maximum amounts that can be deposited, from £1,000 to £99,000, and this range has more to do with the casino than your card.
BetVictor places a £1,000 deposit limit, which is 5 times lower than the next lowest (and applied equally to its debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay), and William Hill has the highest limit at £99,000. bet365 and Midnite have £20,000 and £5,000 limits respectively, and All British has a £5,000 limit.
The limits we discussed above are not technical. Bet365, for example, has a lower betting limit to protect themselves from risk exposure. Not publishing any deposit limit, like Betway, Betfred and MrQ, means the only way to know the limit is through a deposit that fails.
One of the things to look out for is BetVictor's odd limit. They allow a withdrawal of up to £30,000, while only allowing a deposit of £1,000. Money can leave the system in large amounts while only small amounts can enter the system.
How long a card payout really takes
Debit cards operate using a centalized slow system; newer methods are actually faster. With a card refund, the card scheme processes the refund, and they set the pace.
MrQ is an exception, processing refunds in 60 seconds, or paying you £10 for taking longer than 60 seconds. Grosvenor is one of the best when it comes to card withdrawals, with most withdrawals processed within 15 minutes, while other card withdrawals are processed in 1 to 3 working days. William Hill also processes withdrawals in 4 hours for cards that are Visa Direct, and takes 1 to 3 working days for the rest.
At the slow end, Midnite takes up to 5 working days for card withdrawals, while it only takes 3 working days for bank withdrawals, so cards are in fact the slowest methods for withdrawals at Midnite's cashier. BetVictor's requires up to 24 hours for withdrawals, All British takes 24 hours for card withdrawals on working days.
Most answers to withdrawal time questions are "it depends on your card." Visa Direct and Fast Withdrawals are pus-payment systems that allow casinos to send money to cards in a matter of minutes, and not all cards are compatible with these systems. Casinos can not inform you which side of this system your card is on.
The fee your bank might add
All ten institutions don’t charge you to deposit funds via card. One, however, mentions the charge but is still the cheapest in the marketplace. The only method here that actually charges you a fee to hold a balance is paysafecard, for which a code costs £3 per month.
bet365 has an additional clause that the other nine don’t mention. They do not charge for deposits made via debit card, but “some card issuers consider betting transactions as 'cash' payments and therefore may charge you a cash advance fee””. Gambling transactions have their own merchant category code (MC), and numerous issuers treat them like cash withdrawal transactions.
Whether or not this impacts you is strictly a matter of your bank, not the casino. It is worth a look into the account terms of your bank since a fee per deposit can change the equation for small, frequent deposits over any of the minimums for this site’s casinos.
The only card charge noted in this comparison is Betway, which despite providing free bank withdrawal, charges £1 when withdrawing funds below £5. Everything else is free, both ways.
Why it has to be a debit card
A ban on using credit cards for gambling in Great Britain came into effect on 14 April 2020. The Gambling Commission announced the ban in January, stating that online and offline gambling (except non-remote lotteries) would be covered, following research that said 22% of online gamblers paying by credit card were classified as problem gamblers, with UK Finance estimating 800,000 people used credit to pay for gambling.
Every single casino highlights this, and many of them have extra lengthy statements about it. Grosvenor repeats its card statement three times on one page. All British states it on their payments page: credit cards are prohibited at all online casinos in the UK. MrQ shuts down the obvious workaround by refusing any deposit that comes from a credit card, even if it is processed through an e-wallet.
Betfred has the most comprehensive answer to where credit cards still work: residents of Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands. None of these places fall within the jurisdiction of Great Britain, and thus the exception is solely for them.
American Express is a completely separate situation and is not accepted at any of the ten, in spite of the ban.
Blocking gambling on your own card
A debit card is issued by your bank, which also means your bank can stop it for gambling. Most of the banks in the UK and the newer app based bank accounts provide a gambling block that you can enable yourself, usually with a cooling-off period to delay the lift of the block.
This isn’t just another tool for you to self-exclude from. Self-exclusion schemes will not be completely effective unless also supported by other tools, such as gambling blocking software and payment card blocking. In the same announcement which banned credit card gambling, the same statement made participation in GAMSTOP compulsory for every online operator from 31 March 2020, which is why all ten casinos here are signed up to it.
GamCare provides a blocking software guide for more information. The National Gambling Helpline is also free and can be reached at 0808 8020 133. If you’re wondering about blocking cards, our responsible gambling page describes the three layers – GAMSTOP, bank block, and device software – that you may wish to set up.
Against open banking and PayPal
There are three main methods of funding your UK casino account, and two of the five things that matter.
| Debit card | Open banking | PayPal | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casinos offering it | 10 of 10 | 8 of 10 | 7 of 10 |
| Voids a welcome offer | Never | At 2 casinos | At 2 casinos |
| Typical minimum | £5 | £5 | £10, or £25 at bet365 |
| Card details reach the casino | Yes | No | No |
| Chargeback route exists | Yes | No | Card behind it may |
| Slowest published payout | 5 business days | 72 hours | 1 working day |
A card will never be excluded from a bonus, and it is the only method which has a card scheme behind it to provide protection for any payment that goes wrong. It is also the method that introduces the risk of giving your card details to the casino, which is also the slowest method of cashing out. Apple Pay also has the same reach and hides the card number, but restricts withdrawals at three casinos – find out which from the Apple Pay casinos guide.
For the final two options, see the Pay by Bank casinos guide or the PayPal casinos guide.
Frequently asked questions
Yes. All ten casinos we monitor accept Visa and Mastercard debit, which means it is the only method with full coverage. It is also the only method no casino leaves out from a welcome offer, and at Betway and Betfred it is the only option to obtain a welcome offer.
Five pounds at most of them, including bet365, William Hill, Midnite, BetVictor and Grosvenor. All British Casino and PlayOJO both apply a £10 general minimum. Betway, Betfred and MrQ have no deposit minimum.
This can vary from 60 seconds to 5 business days, for example MrQ will process your withdrawal in 60 seconds or pay you £10, Grosvenor will most likely take 15 minutes with Fast Withdrawals, BetVictor suggest this might incur a wait up to 24 hours, and Midnite is the slowest at up to 5 business days.
Unfortunately no. From 14 April 2020, under the direction of the Gambling Commission, credit card gambling, with the exemption of non-remote lotteries, was prohibited. American Express is also refused and Grosvenor points out their credit card and Amex ban three times on one single web page.
This may be the case and bet365 is currently the only casino that mentions this. Their terms state that some banks may classify bets as cash transactions and will therefore levy a cash advance fee. The casino does not charge you, so any bank fee is at your expense.
Yes, UK banks have gambling blocks that can be enabled in their apps. The Gambling Commission has suggested that self-exclusion is most effective when combined with other tools such as gambling blocking software and payment card blocking. GamCare has a guide to what tools are available.
