Eight of ten casinos have it, placing open banking as the second most accessible method of banking next to the debit card. Read the offer column against the one next to it. Unlike PayPal, only two casinos will make you forfeit the welcome bonus to use open banking.

Grosvenor is the interesting one. Their welcome offer cites PayPal and Paysafe as methods that will disqualify the offer, and they make no mention to Instant Bank Transfer, so going through the Bank Transfer is the method of claiming it there. At Betway and Betfred the offer requires a debit card deposit, so open banking will cost you the bonus at both.

Why one thing has five different names

This is the single most confusing corner of UK casino payments, and it isn't your fault. Open Banking Limited, responsible for the UK standard, states that using this method “is sometimes referred to as Pay by Bank, Pay by Link, Bank Pay, Pay with Bank Transfer, or Instant bank transfer.”

In eight of the casinos here, it is offered under five different names. Each of the eight does the same thing. You select your bank account, approve the payment via your banking app, and your funds move from your account to the casino without a card ever touching them.

Betway, Midnite and bet365 all have their own payment methods using different Open Banking providers. For Betway, their Help Centre states that their Pay By Bank method is handled by TrueLayer and that their Trustly method is handled by yet another company.

What to make of that. If a casino shows you both, they are really not a choice. Pick whichever one lists your bank. of the two payment methods at Bet365, use Trustly to transfer larger amounts as its limit is closer to five times the limit on Pay By Bank.

One to look out for. Trustly is mentioned on William Hill's payments page, but the page restricts it to customers from Finland. William Hill's Open Banking provider for the UK is Pay By Bank, and Trustly on that page is not available.

bet365 is the only casino on this list which actually tells users which banks work before sign-up. bet365’s Trustly page cites twelve banks that work with Trustly: Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, NatWest, Santander, Nationwide, Bank of Scotland, Monzo, TSB, Starling, Danske Bank, and Bank of Ireland. They also support Pay by Bank along Trustly, and the two are not the same. With Trustly, transactions can go up to £25,000, whereas Pay by Bank is capped at £5,500. Both Trustly and Pay by Bank accept transactions starting at £5 and both credit immediately. Additionally, bet365’s welcome offer includes no excluded payment methods, meaning Pay by Bank will grant you the free spins.

With William Hill, the deposit range of Pay By Bank (£5 to £99,000) and their debit card (£5 to £33,000) is the same, but unlike others on this page, both directions are generous. Withdrawals take either an instant process or a wait of up to one business day. Trustly, on the same page, is unrelated to Pay By Bank and William Hill claims that for banking customers registered in Finland only.

PlayOJO places Trustly among the PayPal, Visa, Mastercard and Apple Pay payment methods and claims instantaneous bidirectional transactions. PlayOJO's site-wide £10 minimum deposit, compared to £5 that most open banking rails in the market start at, is higher. PlayOJO stands out for outstanding wagering policy, as OJO's no-wagering offer is integrated as its rewards policy and extends to all promotions, which means that the 50 Welcome Spins are completely wagering free.

Midnite offers both Trustly and Pay By Bank on equal terms, that is, a minimum deposit and withdrawal of £5, with the upper limit set at £5000. Each method at Midnite shares the same terms and conditions, therefore the cashier is arguably the simplest to work with on this page. One thing to know is that Midnite only active one payment method at a time, which means that if you wish to change the payment method from open banking to a card for example, you will be required to go through the change process and it is not a one tap switch.

Betway is the only one of these casinos to actually identify their Open Banking provider, saying on their own help pages that Pay by Bank is through TrueLayer, a company that is ‘approved by the FCA’ (think of this as a trusted company). Betway also offers Trustly. The Betway restriction for all welcome offers for deposits by bank will of course mean no 150 wager-free spins. Betway has no published deposit or withdrawal limits for any method.

Betfred calls it Instant Banking and has the best of the eight clear descriptions, saying that “Paying from your Bank” is quick, safe, and secure with no need for card information and two-factor authentication. It also offers a standard Bacs transfer rail, meaning there are two different bank routes offered by Betfred which have different transfer speeds. There are two issues. No limits are published for any method, and the Betfred welcome offer also requires a debit card deposit, so Instant Banking will not provide you with the welcome offer spins.

This is the casino where banking through the Instant Bank Transfer actually beats everything. For starters, Google Pay, Paysafe, and PayPal deposits are all excluded from the Welcome offer. Thankfully there is no mention of Instant Bank Transfer, so bank is how you take advantage of the £40 bonus and 100 spins. Limits are also posted correctly as £5 in and £5 out. Grosvenor also says their Fast Withdrawals system allows them to process almost all payouts in 15 minutes. Their method table is also the most detailed of the 10.

At MrQ, it’s called Easy Bank Transfer and is processed through an open banking system. It’s on a closed list of 5 methods, and MrQ states outright that this is the best way to test the casino and cash out if they are able to fulfil their standard of a 60-second withdrawal or a £10 cash prize. With no banking network in the middle, it also is the best way to ensure cash outs happen in that 60 seconds. There is also no mention of the Welcome offer excluding any methods, and real money can be won from the 100 free spins.

Two casinos that do not take it

Of the 10, only two have no option for open banking for UK players, and the gap tells you something different about each.

All British Casino

Again, there’s no Pay by Bank, no open banking, of any sort. Apple Pay and Google Pay are both limited to deposits as well, which leaves debit cards or PayPal as the only options for both payment and cash out. Slow bank transfer takes 1 to 3 working days, which is literally the opposite of what open banking is for.

PayPal or a debit card.

BetVictor

The cashier with the least options in the UK: three deposit options, no e-wallets or open banking. The bank runs a wider payment stack in other countries, but has no bank route in at all.

You will likely have to use a debit card, which is your only option.

Whether your bank actually works

Wallets that use open banking only work with certain banks, and coverage is not complete. This is where the eight casinos differ, because seven of them will not provide this information until you get to the cashier.

bet365 is the only one to provide this. On its Trustly page, it has published a list of banks supported: Bank of Scotland, NatWest, Barclays, Lloyds, Santander, Nationwide, HSBC, Monzo, TSB, Starling, Danske Bank and Bank of Ireland. Twelve banks.

Betfred states that the limitation is known to them, but remains unsolved, as open banking is supported by most banking institutions in the UK, and if your bank is not on the list, you will have to use another payment method. The others say nothing of the sort. If you are a customer of a smaller bank, or a building society, or one of the app-based banks, assume you will find out the option is not available until you go to deposit.

Open Banking Limited states 12 million consumers and businesses in the UK use open banking, and the Financial Conduct Authority regulates all such providers. The coverage continues to grow, so a bank that failed has the potential to work.

Limits and speed

Deposits credit instantly at all eight. The unique thing about the ceilings is the range, and it is greater than any other method on this site.

Betway, BetfredNot publishedNot published

William Hill's £99,000 vs Midnite's £5,000 is a substantial difference of twenty times for the same underlying rail, which tells you that each casino is setting its own risk limit, because the technology does not place any limit. The odd comparison is in bet365 where Trustly takes almost five times what its Pay by Bank button takes.

Open banking is often the quickest option a casino provides as there is no card network to settle. Grosvenor places it in the 15-minute Fast Withdrawals group, and at MrQ, it falls within the 60-second guarantee. Midnite is the lone outlier at up to 3 days, which is part of Midnite's bank policy and has nothing to do with open banking.

What you gain, and what you give up

The gain is real and easy to state. No card number gets to the casino because you approve the payment in your banking app. Open Banking Limited is straight forward, with open banking you never need to provide security details, and you authenticate the same way you do with your bank, with a PIN, fingerprint or face scan.

There is some great property here, nothing to cloned, nothing to expire mid-session, and nothing to be stolen from the casino. For a payment method at a gambling site, that is good property.

Here is the section marketing skips. A card payment is processed by a card scheme and card schemes have a chargeback process. An open banking payment is a payment you authorised from your account. There is no scheme for you to appeal to. Think about how important this is to the industry by looking to see how carriers sell themselves to merchants: TrueLayer even cites “eliminating all expenses tied to fraud and chargebacks” as a motivator to move away from cards.

Read that twice. One of the selling points of this rail, from the casino's side of the table, is that it eliminates the dispute mechanism cards provide. This is not a reason to avoid it at a licensed operator, where a complaint goes to the casino and then to IBAS. This is a reason to set limits to the amount of deposits you are willing to lose to a dispute you are certain to lose.

One last point. Since the payment is made from your bank account, it will be reflected a transaction made at a gambling establishment from your main account. Open Banking undermines this if you have been using a separate card to keep your gambling spending concealed.

Against a debit card and PayPal

These are the three realistic ways to fund a UK casino account. Here are how some key features of paying by bank compare to the others.

 Debit cardOpen bankingPayPal
Casinos offering it10 of 108 of 107 of 10
Typical minimum£5£5£10, or £25 at bet365
Voids a welcome offerNeverAt 2 casinosAt 2 casinos
Card details reach the casinoYesNoNo
Chargeback route existsYesNoCard behind it may
Highest published ceiling£99,000£99,000£5,500

No surprises, open banking wins on ceilings and privacy and matches the card on minimums. PayPal’s ceilings are the lowest of the three by a wide margin, capped at £5,500 at both casinos that have a published figure. A debit card is the sole method that is never excluded from a bonus, and the debit card casinos guide does an excellent job of publishing each ceiling and payout time.

As for the third column, the PayPal casinos guide prices every minimum and both offer traps. Open banking seems to be what has replaced old wallets: seven of the eight casinos that do not accept Skrill and Neteller, run a bank rail instead.

Which one to pick

If you want to know it will work

bet365 is the only casino that discloses the twelve banks its rail supports, and its Trustly option facilitates transactions up to £25,000.

Visit bet365

If you want the bonus too

Grosvenor blocks PayPal and Paysafe from its welcome offer, but Instant Bank Transfer is acceptable, so paying by bank allows you to keep the £40 and 100 spins.

Visit Grosvenor

If you want paying out to be quick

MrQ puts £10 behind a 60-second processing promise, and a bank rail with no card network in it is the best way to hold them to it.

Visit MrQ

If the bonus is why you are here

Avoid open banking at Betway and Betfred. Both require a debit card deposit to qualify, so paying by bank means you forfeit the offer at each.

Frequently asked questions

It is called open banking. After selecting your bank, you authorise the payment within your bank’s application. The funds move from your account without the use of a card. Open Banking Limited (who oversees the UK standard) states that this process is labeled as “Pay by Bank,” “Bank Pay,” “Pay with Bank Transfer,” or “Instant bank transfer” by various vendors.

Of the ten we monitor, bet365, William Hill, PlayOJO, Midnite, Betway, Betfred, Grosvenor Casinos and MrQ. only All British Casino and BetVictor have no open banking option for UK players. bet365, Midnite and Betway run two distinct open banking payment methods.

Both are open banking, but they are provided by different companies. Two providers named by casinos in our list are Trustly and TrueLayer and Betway uses both concurrently under Trustly and Pay by Bank respectively. Betfred has Instant Banking, Grosvenor has Instant Bank Transfer, and MrQ has Easy Bank Transfer.

Of the eight. Betaway and Betfred both require the qualifying deposit to be made by debit card, thus if you fund using open banking, you will forfeit the bonus. The other six have no restriction on payment method, which makes open banking generally safer for bonus purposes than PayPal.

bet365, the only company to say, lists twelve banks: Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds, Nationwide, Monzo, Starling and Santander among others. They say they work with most UK banks but you will have to use another method if yours is not on the list.

The payment process is protected by the FCA. Open Banking diers state you will never have to reveal your security details since you approve the payment from within your banking app. The draw back is that there is no card to process the payment, so there is no card scheme to process a chargeback.
